The Problem - Inefficiency & Waste
Mankind is faced with virtually limitless wants yet has only limited resources. We satisfy these desires by purchasing all we can afford, yet in the process create tremendous waste and lose untold value.
Every day trillions of dollars in useful assets sit unused all across the world. People own large quantities of items they hardly ever use, while others are forced to go without. People are constantly forced to choose whether to waste money buying things they rarely need (waste money), to attempt to borrow from friends (annoying, slow, stressful), or to physically go to some rental store without being able to see what they have or it if is available (slow, inefficient, costly).
Through all of this we are inconvenienced, and countless value is wasted. One outcome is that most Americans buy and own large quantities of valuable assets, such as drills - barbecues - or extra vehicles, that sit underutilized, sometimes not used once in a year.
These items sit for years until they get too dirty and old to even appear useful. At this point they fill our landfills and create additional waste, without ever having benefited us. We wasted money and created waste by purchasing things we only needed a couple of times. This system is totally inefficient.
Luckily, we have found a way to improve it.
The Solution - Sharing
The solution is iRent2u.com. An easy way to think of it is “eBay for Rentals”.
iRent2u (http://www.iRent2u.com), spoken like “I Rent To You”, creates a single, local marketplace for the rental of goods and services. It’s simple-to-use web-platform enables people to rent items (lend & borrow), and sell services, to and from their neighbors and local businesses.
What types of goods and services? Literally anything (legal) you can think of. Users can search for what is closest to them and easiest to get, for what costs the least amount of money, and for what comes from the most trustworthy lenders. Special protections are included to make sure everyone gets a fair deal.
The entire focus for the site is using the online community to build your physical community. We want to give back to people a reason to meet and speak with their neighbors, while at the same time saving them money, and reducing their consumption & waste. It is really the next logical step after recycling, and it allows people to get more from what they already have.
We received our initial startup funding by winning the Pepperdine MBA business plan competition in February 2007. At the time one of the judges said it has the potential to “Change the face of commerce.” This is what we aim to do. We want to change the world, by letting everyone take advantage of the power of spare cycles.
Together We Have More
Recently the famous internet guru Chris Anderson wrote an article about the Power of Spare Cycles. The simple concept behind it is that through the internet we have been able to take advantage of the large amounts of spare time most people have. Think of the total number of blogs in the world, now said to exceed 60 million, and how that is usually accomplished during peoples’ spare time. Or think of the huge increase in social networking sites, and how much of that is done while people are “at work”. His comments were very powerful, pointing out how entire operating systems that now compete head to head with Microsoft and Windows were basically created for free by people who were taking advantage of their spare cycles (I am referring to open source programs).
This is all very powerful because many of us tend to think we are busy people, yet a lot of our time is wasted accomplishing nothing. Well if so much can be squeezed out of our busy lives, imagine how much extra can be squeezed out of the lives of the things we own that presently are almost completely unused. By putting all that stuff to work, you can make money, reduce storage space, and create value. So by sharing, you have more.
But what am I referring to? Just think of where you live. Look around and try to remember when was the last time you used some of the items you see. Or better yet, look in your garage or primary storage areas. I can tell you that I have a set of golf clubs that I haven’t even been able to use once! Think of how much value was wasted with that purchase.
Do you have an extra vehicle? Maybe a truck that you purchased to move things, yet only use once every few months. Imagine being able to make some extra money by lending it out to your community members. Not everyone can afford to buy a truck they won’t use every day. They will save a lot of money by borrowing your truck, and you can regain some of the value that is being wasted while it sits idle in your driveway.
Change the World: Start in Your Garage
Earlier we said we want to change the world, but the truth is we can’t. Alone all we can do is create a great website for you to use. It is you who will change the world. The best part is that you can start today in your own garage, and the first person to benefit from that change is you!
We have made it as easy as possible, and the benefits are tremendous. By sharing your possessions you make money. You can use that money to either buy more stuff, or better yet rent some things you could never before afford. Imagine lending out your truck a few times and then renting a vacation villa in Spain for a week with the money!
And for your neighbor, perhaps having your truck available to borrow is so convenient that he does it more often, and is able to accomplish more than he ever could before. The applications of this are so vast they are hard to fathom, but they are real and within your reach.
This I know for sure, the time for sharing has come. Together we can reduce waste, and increase abundance. Together we can have more fun, while working less. Together we can have much more, for less money. Together we have more, and what could be better than that?
